Mercy Creek Review by Pete Rogers
I was extremely pleased with this book. It is well written and the story is full of surprises and twists. Matt Matthews has set a high bar for his first novel, I can only hope his next work is comparable. This should be destined to be a best seller.
Mercy Creek Review by Annielaura Jaggers
Can you imagine that a summer spent with a fifteen-year-ild boy, Isaac, could hold the attention of an adult? It held mine, and I am an adult.
Can yu think the mystery that challenged Isaac would challenge you? I found it as intriguing as any one of Mrs. Marple's or Poirot's. Can you feel that the love interests of Isaac could make you wish, as he does, to embrace and hold his love? I yearned for him to succeed. You can want Isaac to collect the $5,000 reward for helping the police solve the mysterious house-damaging happenings, can't you? Isaac's parents can not furnish him with an allowance. I had no trouble identifying with that. Nor did I anticipitate what Isaac does with the guilty party when he identifyies him/her. I think that will be your surprise of Isaac's summer.
Mercy Creek Review by Dr. Jesse R. Hale "Jesse R. Hale" (Roswell, Georgia)
Mercy Creek is an exciting read for those who love Southern Literature and prose. Matt Matthews weaves a story of conflict, mystery, ancient southern culture and its sins against men and women of all races and economic status. The book comforts, albeit gently, the bigotry of the old south. At first, I thought redemption and revenge were the eventual message points; however, in the end, it was that of forgiveness. There's a lot of "storytelling" packed into the 205 pages. Good job Matt Matthews!

Mercy Creek::Description
In the sulky summer days of a Virginia Eastern Shore town, a current of guilt and repression flows beneath the placid surface of respectability. In this year after his mother's death, with girlfirend problems and his father's flirting with a new romance, 16-year-old Issac faces not only the mysteries of his coming of age but also the mysteries of a twisted communal past.
A summer job at Chum's Hardware introduces Issac to Crazine Eddie, an acerbic 82-year-old who is outspoken about everything except the string of bizzare vandalisms pulling down big headlines in the weekly paper. Someone is flooding the houses of Rooksville's leading citizens and leaving a signature of painted flames on the walls. a clutch of sell-righteous viglilantes who gather at the hardware store offers a $5,000 reward for the conviction of whoever is responsible--and they have their eyes on Issac.
Issac quickly discovers that small towns where everybody knows everybody else's business often hide the most vicious secrets. A lost ledger at Chum's and the unmoored rantings of the town's recluse about the Klan are the first clues to the unexplained puzzles that swirl like dust motes at the hardware store. By laying bare the stains of history and facing the town's hatemonger, Issac resolves the question of where he belongs in the world.
In this quietly suspenseful story with splashes of manic humor, the eccentrics, the outcasts, the bigots, anf the bores join the human parade. Mercy Creek is a memorable novel by a new voice who deserves to be heard.
